Photographers are always looking for new ways to improve the composition of their photos and leading lines are a great way to grab the attention of a viewer. While there are no actual ‘rules’ to creating your photo compositions, it can certainly help to know some techniques that can be used to improve them.

If you are not familiar with the concept of leading lines, it is when you use lines which appear in your composition to draw the eye of the viewer towards your subject.

The lines in the photo above lead you to the bride, making her a strong focus of attention in the composition. Symmetrical leading lines like these draw even more focus, but that doesn’t mean that your leading lines HAVE to be symmetrical. Check out the photo below:

The overhead ‘arms’ of the carousel draw your attention to the laughing, smiling faces of the couple in the picture.
