What’s the deal with how video guys dress? I have seen it at weddings, private and corporate events, even at commercial video shoots. This topic has been discussed generally on the podcast, but, in my twenty plus years as a professional photographer, it is usually the videographer who doesn’t dress appropriately for the job.

It is so commonplace that when I arrive at a gig and I see someone who seems horribly underdressed for the occasion, I can immediately guess that it’s the video guy.

To be fair, I don’t expect video guys to dress in tuxedos or even be wearing a suit, but you should dress for the gig. If you are shooting video for a black tie event, you should AT LEAST be wearing a dress shirt and pants.

However, I have often seen videographers show up wearing ripped jeans and a t-shirt to formal events. WHY is this? Come on, video guys! TELL ME WHY!!!

Once, at a formal wedding, a video guy that I had subcontracted showed up wearing a dirty white t-shirt and jeans. His assistant was wearing overall shorts and a crop top with sandals. You would think that I would discuss how to dress beforehand, right? Well, I did!! They even signed an agreement that explicitly states what they should be wearing. In response, I made them go to their car and change because apparently they had just left the formal clothes in their vehicle for some reason not thinking that they were important or all that necessary.

I just don’t understand. Someone please explain it to me. If you’re a video guy who dresses like this to events or gigs where everyone else is in formal wear, hit me up on Instagram or Twitter and tell me what the deal is!!
